At Embassy Manyata Business Park, the absence of real-time monitoring led to inconsistent extraction of water from borewells across different blocks. Some borewells were over-extracting water, posing a risk of exceeding the approved limit of 562 KLD set by the Karnataka Groundwater Authority (KGWA) and attracting penalties for non-compliance.
Initiative
To ensure sustainable water extraction and compliance with KGWA regulations, flow meters were installed on all borewells within Embassy Manyata Business Park. The implementation involved the following key steps:
- Installation of flow meters at all operational borewells to measure real-time extraction.
- Setting extraction limits for each borewell based on individual yield and the overall 562 KLD cap.
- Regular monitoring of borewell extraction data to ensure compliance with KGWA regulations.
- Redistribution of extraction among active borewells to compensate for dried-up borewells.
- Risk mitigation by preventing over-extraction and avoiding regulatory action or fines.
Outcomes
Despite challenges related to calibration and technical issues, the initiative was implemented successfully. Accurate tracking of water extraction now ensures compliance with prescribed limits, while reduced over-extraction promotes fair distribution and sustainable consumption.
The system enables proactive management of water withdrawal by identifying and rectifying inconsistencies and fluctuations, improving both accuracy and transparency in reporting. This ensures regulatory compliance and helps avoid risks such as legal action, revocation of borewell usage rights, stricter compliance requirements, increased operational costs, and reputational damage.
Importantly, controlled extraction has led to water savings of 100–110 KL per day and cost savings of approximately Rs 11,000 per day.
